The Silence - A Poem
THE SILENCE
The night is silent - there is
no wind blowing through the trees,
only silence, the madding silence
of a windless, autumn night.
It racks my brain, this silence
It echoes through the chambers
of my empty, sullen heart
and overwhelms my soul with grief.
If only it would rain - and better
if it should be a stormy rain,
the lightning and clamorous thunder
would brighten this quiet, somber eve.
But still it lingers, this silence
It tarries yet a little longer
to haunt my restless slumber
until at last I sleep - and dream.
