Sanctuary's Child - A Poem
SANCTUARY’S CHILD
She was a quiet soul
With a gentle heart
And a silent mind;
She took no part
In daily chores
And made no start
To open the door
To life.
Her useless body
Had nothing to give;
A painful memory
Forever lived
Within her quiet soul.
She loved him so much
But could not mold
Or clutch
His restless spirit;
She could not bear it
When he departed;
She was broken-hearted.
In starry dreams
She often seemed
To feel happiness
But, waking,
The silent sadness
Returned
To blear her eyes
And burn
The quiet soul
Till the pain
Took control
And brought the rain
Of salty tears
That ran in vain
For years
For the happy
Restless one
Who was gone.
But time went on
In spite of sorrow,
And one fateful night
Just before the morrow
The quiet soul
Took rest
In the eyes
Of Death,
No more sighs,
No more breaths
But an eternity
Of silence.
